Yesterday’s Mystery Object was a Rattle.
This object is a wooden rattle but instead of being used by children as a toy, it was used in emergencies. If a watchman were to see a fire or witness some other emergency the only way to notify people of danger was to make a very loud sound. Since they did not have sirens or alarms, and since yelling may not get the job done, the watchman’s rattle would be used to raise alarm.
