Thematic Tour: John Jay and George Washington

Happy birthday, George Washington! George Washington respected John Jay so much that, as president, he gave Jay his choice of job in the new administration. Join us on a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House to explore the close relationship between these two leaders of our early Republic.Tours depart from the glass porch of the Main House at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Thematic Tour: Women of the Jay Family

Sarah, Nancy, Eleanor and the rest! Six generations of strong, educated women lived at John Jay’s Bedford House. Their stories shed light on the roles of women in upper class homes in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House highlighting the lives of the Jay women.Tours depart from the glass porch of the Main House at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Regular admission fees apply.

Scholars Lecture - "Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution"

March 13, 2018 6:30 pm–8:30 pm

Tuesday, March 13.  Nathaniel Philbrick, Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution. Philbrick gives a challenging and sympathetic interpretation of the relationship between George Washington and Benedict Arnold, who was a hero, brilliant general, and close confidant before he became a traitor.  Valiant Ambition has won the George Washington Book Prize; Philbrick is also the author of 10 other books, and winner of many book prizes and awards, including a National Book Award (In the Heart of the Sea), and Pulitzer Prize finalist (Mayflower).

All lectures take place in the Iselin Wing at John Jay Homestead. Registration and refreshments begin at 6:30 pm. Lectures begin at 7 pm.

Happy birthday, James Madison! Our fourth president and Virginia native, James Madison, co-authored The Federalist Papers with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. Madison and Jay were instrumental in the ratification of the United States Constitution in 1787, but diverged politically afterwards when Madison aligned with Thomas Jefferson and his Democratic-Republicans. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House highlighting the relationship between these two Founding Fathers.Tours depart from the glass porch of the Main House at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Regular admission fees apply.

Although Jay and Monroe fell on different sides of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, the two men shared an interest and experience in the difficult realm of foreign policy. Both Founding Fathers served as ambassadors to European nations, negotiating important treaties on behalf of the United States. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House highlighting the relationship between these two Founding Fathers. Regular admission fees apply.

The Homestead’s expert staff offers a guided exploration of the paintings and sculptures on display in John Jay’s historic Bedford home. The multiple generations of Jays who lived at the Homestead collected art in many forms including family portraits, an original landscape by Thomas Cole, a plaster bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon, and prints given to John Jay by John Trumbull of his most famous history paintings. Join us as we delve into the artistic record of the American Revolution and the Jay Family. Regular admission fees apply.

John Jay’s Not-So-Big City: A Walk Through the History of Old New York

Founding Father John Jay was a native son of New York City, but the city he knew was not the metropolis we know today. This tour takes us along many of the same streets John Jay walked as we visit locations where he lived, worked, played, and prayed. Plan to walk approximately 2 miles during this 3-hour tour. Thematic Tour: Constitutional Convention

May 25, 2018 1:00 pm–5:00 pm

Convened in Philadelphia on May 25th 1787, the Constitutional Convention was originally established to revise the Articles of Confederation, but when the delegates adjourned at the end of July, a whole new form of government had been proposed.  To commemorate the 231st anniversary of the Constitutional Convention, take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House, highlighting his position as a strong proponent of a national government and his involvement in the ratification of the Constitution. Tours at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Regular admission fees apply.

Path Through History – Thematic Tours: The Poughkeepsie Convention

June 16, 2018 1:00 pm–5:00 pm

The New York State Constitutional Convention was held in Poughkeepsie in 1788.   Prior to the convention the delegates numbered 2 to 1 against ratification. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House and learn how the Federalists like John Jay and Alexander Hamilton convinced the delegates to make New York the 11th state to ratify the Constitution. Tours at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Regular admission fees apply.

Path Through History – Thematic Tours: The Battle of Bunker Hill

June 17, 2018 1:00 pm–5:00 pm

On June 17, 1775, 1000 American rebels fought valiantly to secure a hill in Boston. Out-gunned by a British force twice their size, the militia was narrowly defeated after running out of ammunition. The Battle of Bunker Hill provided a much-needed morale boost and the first inclination that even though the battle was lost, the war might be winnable. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House highlighting John Jay’s life at the outbreak of the American Revolution. Tours at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm.  Regular admission fees apply.
