The handle is made of wood and the bristles are made of animal hair. This brush would be used to add shaving cream to your skin before shaving. Shaving cream was usually made into a bar, like a bar of soap. A shaving brush would be used to apply the cream to your face so that you did not have to get your hand wet before shaving.
