The front lawn was originally established by John Jay in the style of the “pleasure grounds” of 18th-century English country estates. In order to keep grazing livestock from getting too near the main residence, Jay built two stone-faced embankments called “ha-has.” These barriers were too tall for the animals to climb over, yet were almost invisible to anyone looking down the lawn from the house.
