Scholars Lecture: The Second Founding with Eric Foner

  •  March 12, 2020
     7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

This lecture has been postponed for a date to be determined.

Eric Foner, The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution

The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments abolished slavery, defined birthright citizenship, and prohibited denial of the right to vote based on race. Foner explores the circumstances under which these Amendments were passed, and the ways in which they’re being interpreted still, as recently as 2013, when the Supreme Court declined to use the 15th Amendment to strike down laws which make it more difficult for non-whites to vote. Foner is the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, and winner of the Pulitzer, Bancroft and Lincoln Prizes, as well as multiple other awards and honors.

All lectures take place in the Iselin Wing at John Jay Homestead. Check in and refreshments begin at 6:30 pm. Lectures begin at 7:00 pm.

Scholars Lecture: Separate with Steve Luxenberg

  •  February 11, 2020
     7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Steve Luxenberg, Separate: The Story of Plessy v. Ferguson, and America’s Journey from Slavery to Segregation

Separate traces the careful building in 1896 of a test case to establish freedom from race-based segregation in public accommodations. The strategy backfired badly in Plessy v. Ferguson, when the Supreme Court ruled that “separate but equal” did not violate the Constitution. Justice John Marshall Harlan was the sole dissenter, declaring that “the Constitution is color-blind” and it would take 60 years to reverse the precedent, in Brown v. Board of Education. Luxenberg is an associate editor at The Washington Post, and oversaw reporting that won two Pulitzers.

All lectures take place in the Iselin Wing at John Jay Homestead. Check in and refreshments begin at 6:30 pm. Lectures begin at 7:00 pm.

Music from Copland House – SONIC IMAGES: CHAMBER MUSIC OF AARON COPLAND

  •  November 3, 2019
     3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

America’s musical past and future meet when the internationally-acclaimed Music from Copland House ensemble – hailed by The New Yorker as “bold,” “adventurous,” and “superb” – moves its popular mainstage concert series to the John Jay Homestead this season. With its unique focus on 150 years of American musical creativity and imagination, explored within broad historical and societal contexts, MCH concerts – included among Westchester magazine’s “Best of the Decade” – offer ear-opening discoveries and surprising cultural journeys. The ensemble’s season features World and New York Premieres, revivals of 19th- and 20th-century masterworks, new pieces written by the 2020 Fellows of Copland House’s highly-anticipated CULTIVATE emerging composers institute (directed by Derek Bermel), and music inspired by the Gilded Age, and by the intersection of music and visual arts. Each program will last an hour, without intermission, and will be followed by a meet-the-artists reception.

Inaugurating this new series is a pre-birthday salute to an artistic icon and Music from Copland House’s namesake – a commanding figure who helped to define the sound and spirit of what he called “a recognizably American musical idiom.” Major chamber works, including the Violin Sonata, Piano Quartet, and Sextet. MCH ARTISTS: Derek Bermel, clarinet; Magdalena Filipczak and Pala Garcia, violins; Danielle Farina, viola; Alexis Pia Gerlach, cello; Michael Boriskin, piano.
