Dot Voorhees grew up in Rye, New York, and attended the University of Miami in Florida, graduating with a degree in Biology. Following that training, she worked for the National Audubon Society and Everglades National Park in Florida as a wildlife research biologist, focusing her study on birds and alligators. After moving back to New York, she worked in advertising research in Manhattan for two years before joining Friends of John Jay Homestead.
