Yesterday’s Mystery Object was a Fire Screen.
The stand is made of brass and the fan is made of fabric. The purpose of this object is to protect your face from the heat of a fireplace. Wanting to sit near the fire for the light it would give at night, someone who is sewing, or reading might find that the heat is too hot. If they move away from the fire however, it becomes harder to see. So, the fire screen was developed to place on a table so that it blocks the fire from whoever is sitting and working at the table. The light can get through, but the heat isn’t so uncomfortable.
