Yesterday’s Mystery Object was a Hat Pin.
The pin portion is made of metal while the handle is made of tortoise shell. Hat pins were invented to keep hats in place. Two pins would usually be used together. The pins would be pressed through the hat and woven into the hair beneath. By pinning the hat to the hair, the hat would not easily fall off.
