Our selection this week of Veteran’s Day is in honor of Colonel William Jay’s service during the Civil War. This sword is an 1850 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword. The Army mandated the use of this sword for all staff officers and for the field officers of infantry, artillery, and riflemen. The blade is decorated with etchings of flower sprays, an eagle and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The floral decorations continue on the handle guard, which also contains a U.S. shield. The collection also contains William Jay’s officer’s sword belt and buckle. The buckle is cast brass and decorated with the same seal as the sword.
