The Ice Pond was created in the mid-19th century for producing ice, which was cut from the pond during the winter and stored in an ice house. Some ice from the pond was used as kitchen ice, but most of it was used for chilling the milk produced here, keeping it cold on its way to the railroad for shipment to New York City.
