Friends of John Jay Homestead is seeking a dynamic Farm Market Manager to cultivate sustainable growth of our weekly farm market with a strong community of vendors and patrons at John Jay Homestead. This opportunity is perfect for someone with a passion for the local food movement and a desire to guide the market’s future. The person in this role sets the tone and represents the market both internally to vendors and externally to shoppers.

The Market Manager is responsible for soliciting, selecting, and enrolling vendors, entertainment, and non-profit partners, spearheading publicity and marketing, developing and directing market layout, overseeing equipment needs, attending each market, ensuring rules and regulations are adhered to, and managing an Assistant Market Manager.

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic advocate for farm markets and locally sourced food and wares. They will be a reliable leader, self-motivated, creative-minded, people person with skills in diplomacy.

The Farm Market runs each Saturday from 9:00am to 2:00pm from the beginning of May through the end of October. This position includes in-season duties (80%) and off-season duties (20%).

Market Manager responsibilities include:

Market Operations:

  • Arrive 1.5 hours before market opening to coordinate setup.
  • Stay at market until all vendors have left.
  • Set up welcome booth tent, table, and display.
  • Place directional signs promoting the market around the property and at key locations.
  • Coordinate vendor parking/setup to ensure vendors are in the correct spot.
  • Staff the welcome booth and provide information to customers.

Market Support:

  • Develop and maintain good relationships with vendors, customers, and the community.
  • Assist vendors, community representatives, and customers by providing market-related information, conflict resolution, and general aid as appropriate.
  • Vendor recruitment and enrollment including applications, permits, insurance, and licenses as necessary.
  • Understand the needs of market participants to create a booth layout designed for success.
  • Improve and expand efficiency of operations.
  • Enforce market rules.

Outreach and Marketing:

  • Work with Friends office to promote the market through social media, e-newsletters, and community outreach.
  • Coordinate with local nonprofits and community partners to feature their organizations at the Market.
  • Post interesting, relevant and high quality photos/information to social media outlets that encourage shopper attendance.
