Thematic Tour—Homes of the Founding Fathers

On May 18, 1768, Thomas Jefferson began to build Monticello. His home, along with those of the John Jay and the other Founders, allow us to understand the men and women who started our nation as individuals, family members, and home owners.

The number of tickets available for each tour is strictly limited. We strongly recommend you purchase your tickets in advance. Please note that all members of your party are required to have a ticket for admittance, even if there is no fee associated with their ticket. Tickets are transferable, but not refundable.

It wasn’t until the late 18th century that dining rooms began appearing in American homes, and with their advent came a need for new types of furniture. Examine John Jay’s 1790s dining table and some of the many other objects used by him while taking meals.
