Connecting to Collections – Fine Arts: Landscapes and Genre Scenes

October 7, 2018 2:00 pm–3:00 pm

Landscapes and cityscapes were placed on the middle rung of the hierarchy of artistic subjects developed by the European academies in the Renaissance; below narrative paintings of the human figure, but above still-life paintings of fruit. Join us as we present examples of landscapes and other genres of art in the John Jay Homestead’s collection. This installment of the Fine Arts Tour will include a print depicting the New York City of John Jay’s time, a landscape showing the French hometown of John Jay’s grandfather, a cityscape of New York’s first governor’s mansion in which the Jay family lived from 1795-1797, Genre scenes representing the times of the day, and small prints depicting religious subjects. Regular admission fees apply.
