Thematic Tour: Connecting to Collections – Fine Arts (Works on Paper)

July 1, 2018 2:00 pm–3:00 pm

John and Sarah Jay collected engraved prints depicting the Founding Fathers; some of whom the Jays formed close friendships with, or others who they admired for the subject’s character. During this tour experience, visitors will examine prints commissioned by the artist, drawings created by mechanical means in 1797, and a hand-drawn pastel family portrait. This installment of the Fine Arts Tour will include prints engraved after John Trumbull’s Battle of Bunker Hill and Death of General Montgomery, miniature portraits by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, Sarah Jay and Her Children by James Sharples, an engraved print after the so-called Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington, and an engraved portrait of Benjamin Franklin owned by Sarah Jay. Regular admission fees apply. Additional installments of this tour, examining other pieces from our fine arts collection, will be held on the first Sunday of  August, September, and October. Check our calendar of events to see which pieces will be studied on each of these occasions.
