Yesterday’s Mystery Object was an Ink Well.

This is an inkwell. It is made of clay and is used as a container for pen ink. Before the invention of ballpoint pens and fountain pens, people would use bird feathers, called quills, to write. People would dip the end of the quill into the inkwell in order to cover it with ink and then begin to write.
