Family Series in the Teaching Garden

May 13, 2018 4:00 pm–5:00 pm

The Friends of John Jay Homestead is partnering with INTERGENERATE to present a 6-week gardening series about planting, the growing season, and the life cycle of plants in its Teaching Garden. This class is for families with children ages 4-10. Children make the farm-to-table connection through hands-on planting and tending a vegetable garden while exploring plant parts, ecology and, of course, bugs! Food grown in the Giving Garden will be donated to several organizations supporting those in need.

The 6-week series is limited to 10 families for a fee of $175 per family.
Wait-listed families will be offered early signup for the Summer or Fall series.
Registrants: In addition to attending the one hour class on Sundays, each registered family will be asked to tend the garden during the week, one week per session.

Thematic Tour: Constitutional Convention

May 25, 2018 1:00 pm–5:00 pm

Convened in Philadelphia on May 25th 1787, the Constitutional Convention was originally established to revise the Articles of Confederation, but when the delegates adjourned at the end of July, a whole new form of government had been proposed.  To commemorate the 231st anniversary of the Constitutional Convention, take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House, highlighting his position as a strong proponent of a national government and his involvement in the ratification of the Constitution. Tours at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Regular admission fees apply.

Thematic Tour: Connecting to Collections – Fine Arts (Great American Artists of the 18th and 19th Centuries)

June 3, 2018 2:00 pm–3:00 pm

John and Sarah Jay commissioned the best American painters of their generation to create works that are still on display in museums today. The Jay family continued this tradition for generations. During this tour experience, visitors will examine works by great American artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Objects include: Signing of the Preliminary Treaty of Peace in 1782 by Benjamin West, John Clarkson Jay by Samuel F.B. Morse, several portraits by Daniel Huntington, a wax bust of George Washington recently re-attributed to Joseph Wright (son of Patience Lovell Wright, the first female American sculptor), and a view of the Bay of Naples by Thomas Cole. Regular admission fees apply. Additional installments of this tour, examining other pieces from our fine arts collection, will be held on the first Sunday of July, August, September, and October. Path Through History – Thematic Tours: The Poughkeepsie Convention

The New York State Constitutional Convention was held in Poughkeepsie in 1788.   Prior to the convention the delegates numbered 2 to 1 against ratification. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House and learn how the Federalists like John Jay and Alexander Hamilton convinced the delegates to make New York the 11th state to ratify the Constitution. Tours at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Regular admission fees apply.

Path Through History – Thematic Tours: The Battle of Bunker Hill

On June 17, 1775, 1000 American rebels fought valiantly to secure a hill in Boston. Out-gunned by a British force twice their size, the militia was narrowly defeated after running out of ammunition. The Battle of Bunker Hill provided a much-needed morale boost and the first inclination that even though the battle was lost, the war might be winnable. Take a docent-led tour of John Jay’s Bedford House highlighting John Jay’s life at the outbreak of the American Revolution. Tours at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm.  Regular admission fees apply.

Thematic Tour: Connecting to Collections – Fine Arts (Works on Paper)

July 1, 2018 2:00 pm–3:00 pm

John and Sarah Jay collected engraved prints depicting the Founding Fathers; some of whom the Jays formed close friendships with, or others who they admired for the subject’s character. During this tour experience, visitors will examine prints commissioned by the artist, drawings created by mechanical means in 1797, and a hand-drawn pastel family portrait. This installment of the Fine Arts Tour will include prints engraved after John Trumbull’s Battle of Bunker Hill and Death of General Montgomery, miniature portraits by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, Sarah Jay and Her Children by James Sharples, an engraved print after the so-called Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington, and an engraved portrait of Benjamin Franklin owned by Sarah Jay. Regular admission fees apply. Additional installments of this tour, examining other pieces from our fine arts collection, will be held on the first Sunday of  August, September, and October.
